TEXAS

So after Erik and I went to DC, I went back to Texas with him to make sure he was ok and to hang out with him for 5 days !! I was wonderful... this is the most time I have spent with my brother since 1985 !!! With me being so much older then he is, I moved out when he was still a teenager, then got married and had kids, so I was busy, still not a good excuse to not spend time with them (Kimberlee and Erik) but the truth. ANYWAY, I had never been to Texas and Ft. Hood and he took me all around showing me things.. I got to see my two nephews Gage and Austin !!! I had not seen Gage since he was 1 1/2 and I had never met Austin !! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH !! I then got to go to Waco and meet up with Kristine (SIL) and meet my other new niece Samantha !!! She was so cute and such a happy baby !! They can send her to Aunties house when she is older anytime :) That goes for all my nieces and nephews !! I also got to meet some of Erik's friends from work.. (15) ! I had a great time with Erik in TX. and can't wait to go back to see them again !!

A trip to DC

This month I got to go to DC with my brother Erik.. He was chosen to be a Bone Marrow Donor and had to go to Georgetown to do it, and he asked me to go along with him. We got there on the night of the 16th and had a free day on the 17th. On that day we got to go out and see some of the sites. We went to Arlington National Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, White House and saw the stairs that the Exorcist was filmed. That night we met up with Inge and Kim and I got to meet Kim's daughter Alyja ! It was so nice to see them. On Friday morning we got up early and met the people from the hospital. Erik went in at 730am and I met him in his room at around 1pm. He was up and walking about an hour after that, and got to go back to the hotel that night. On Sat. we went to a movie, which was to much for Erik to do, and then I went to dinner with Inge and Kim again. On Sunday we flew to Texas. It was a great trip !!

McDonald's

McDonald's introduces the Texas, Miami, Manhattan and Idaho big-meat burgers to Japan. Customers say 私はそれを愛している
McDonald's is rolling-out a line of "Big America 2" burgers in Japan.
The fast food giant is Japan's top restaurant chain by number of stores is introducing the Idaho, Manhattan, Miami and Texas burgers to pay homage to the American company's homeland, and its thirst for heavy-calories and fat-packed meals.
The Burger Idaho features a quarter-pound beef patty, melted cheese, strips of bacon, onions and pepper-and-mustard sauce. To honor the Idaho potato, it features a circular block of hash brown potatoes atop the beef patty. The calorie count: 713.
The Texas 2 Burger—with chili, three buns, cheese and bacon—comes in at 645 calories.
The Miami Burger only has 557-calories--only slightly less than a traditional Quarter Pounder with Cheese. The burger does not have the expected Cuban, Jewish or "South Beach Diet" influences one might expect from a Miami Burger. It is meant to evoke the spicy flavor of the American South, or what McDonalds Japan refers to as southwestern “tacos” in their description. It features tortilla chips—not as a side dish, but placed atop the beef patty.
And the Manhattan Burger features an artisan bun, a slice of mozzarella cheese, fresh lettuce, onions, and a slice of pastrami. As the Wall Street Journal points out, McDonald's has been bowing to consumer demands for healthier food offerings in the U.S. But in Japan, McDonald's is banking on oversized burgers stuffed with nachos, hash browns or chili to stimulate sales and profit.
Could this be a similar strategy to that of the tobacco companies who began promoting cigarettes outside the U.S. when smoking in America began to decline?"I believe we are not going in a completely different direction to the U.S.," a McDonald's Japan spokesman said. "Consumers in Japan see beef as what McDonald's can offer, and it tastes good. It's our core competency."

Kokusai Street/Art Gift

We were visiting Kokusai street today and stopped to look at an artist's wares. He started talking to us while Kayleigh was purchasing a few of the works. It turns out that he has a son that is 18 and about to join the Israeli Army.....go figure....apparently he was married to an Israeli woman and they had a kid together. Now divorced the mother and son live in Israel. He likes to show his support of the military...no matter who's military it is. He gave me that painting I am holding. It is all done with spray paint. It is really cool and it was a very appreciated gesture. He is simply a father worried for his son's future in a dangerous profession. I am going to get this work framed and keep it as a reminder of all those that serve. Thanks random artist guy!!!

Volcanoe Blow !!

Authorities in southern Japan today increased alert levels after a volcano produced its most powerful eruption since it exploded back to life almost a week ago. Concern is mounting that the activity could be a prelude to far more destructive eruptions.Shinmoedake, part of the Mount Kirishima cluster of volcanoes on the island of Kyushu, scattered thick ash over a wide area, toppled trees, and shattered windows in buildings and cars five miles away.
Local media said boulders had landed on roads some distance from the 4,662-foot peak, while one woman was reportedly cut by broken glass. No serious injuries have been reported since the volcano erupted last Wednesday, its fist major activity for 52 years.
More than 1,000 residents in high-risk areas were advised to seek refuge in evacuation centers, although so far only about 600 have done so. Those who opted to stay at home are protecting themselves from the ash with facemasks and sunglasses.

James Bond aficionados will know Shinmoedake, located on the border of Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures about 950 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, as the underground lair of Blofeld, 007’s nemesis in the 1967 film, "You only live twice."James Bond aficionados will know Shinmoedake, located on the border of Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures about 950 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, as the underground lair of Blofeld, 007’s nemesis in the 1967 film, "You only live twice."
The initial activity forced the cancellation of dozens of flights and disrupted train services. Many local schools were closed and farmers reported ash damage to crops.
Yesterday, officials widened the no-access zone to 2-1/2 miles from the peak, amid warnings from the meteorological agency that the area could be engulfed with hot gas and ash. The general alert level was raised from 2 to 3, on a scale of 1 to 5.
At one point, the initial eruption sent a plume of smoke 3,000 meters into the air, although by the end of last week the cloud had shrunk to a height of about 1,000 meters.
Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, said today’s eruption was five times bigger than the first one recorded last week.
Pressure from below ground has caused a build-up of lava in the crater that has risen dramatically in the past five days. It is not clear whether the ongoing volcanic activity will produce enough lava – which is formed when liquid magma cools – to breach the crater rim and set off large flows down the sides of the mountain.
Volcanologists warned that similarities existed between the fresh activity and that produced by Shinmoedake 300 years ago. Those eruptions were 10 times bigger than the recent ones and lasted for about 18 months, killing six people, the Yomiuri newspaper reported.Meteorological officials in Kagoshima said satellite images showed that the lava dome had widened from 100 meters across to 500 meters between last Thursday and the weekend.
“The eruption process is quite similar to the eruptions [of 1716 and1717], so more violent eruptions could take place,” Ryusuke Imura, an associate professor at Kagoshima University and expert on volcanic topography, told the newspaper.
Eruptions are not uncommon in Japan, which lies on the “Ring of Fire” of volcanic and seismic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean. Forty-three people died when Mount Unzen, also located on Kyushu, erupted in 1991. In 2000, all 3,800 residents of Miyakejima island were evacuated after Mount Oyama erupted. They were not allowed to return permanently to the island, 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, until early 2005.
Japan’s highest mountain, the 12,389-foot Mount Fuji, is considered at low risk of erupting: its last recorded eruption came in December 1707 and lasted two weeks

Superbowl XLV

This year for the Superbowl we stayed home.. in the past, we have always gone to the O'Club. But this year, we just wanted to stay in our PJ's and hang out.. So, I made a breakfast casserole, choc. muffins, "Superbowl dip", and meatballs. Later today we are going to grill out and enjoy the sunshine !! As for the game.. I really didn't care for either teams, but since I had to pick one, I picked the Steelers... because they are black and gold.. just like Kadena HS and ARMY !! So, I had to go with them. Even though they lost.. oh well, it was a good game. :) Oh, and this will be the last time we watch it on Monday morning !!!
